I approach the unique, therapeutic relationship with straight-forward intent: what is it that has brought you to therapy at this time, and what can I do to help? This open-ended approach allows for focus, but also room to explore fertile territories that may have been long hiding in the shadows. Yes, it's true that, on occasion, I might utter those now seemingly trite words...so, tell me about your mother...but I'm just as likely to be interested in why your current relationships aren't panning out as you wished; or about that novel you're writing; or what it is, specifically, about riding the subway that makes you so anxious each morning. My experience has taught me that therapy is not unlike a spider's web: you may be surprised by what is caught in it; and it can be very enlightening to know just how those many strands are joined together.
Of one thing I am certain: something brought you to this Web site. It is my hope that you find something here that might be helpful, either to you or to someone you know.
